How WellMap Was Born: From a Toothache to a Next-Gen Medical Tourism Platform
The story of WellMap didn’t begin with funding rounds or pitch decks. It began with pain. A simple toothache — at the worst possible moment, in a foreign country.
Ivan Osotov, co-founder of WellMap, was living in Estonia at the time. As an IT entrepreneur and digital nomad, he built contact centers, automated global businesses, and traveled frequently. But when health issues struck abroad, he found himself facing a frustrating truth:
“When you're in a foreign country and dealing with a health problem, you don’t have time to study the market. You need answers — fast. Where do I go? What does it cost? Who’s the doctor? How do I get there?”
From the First Idea to the First Product
That experience sparked the idea for Dento, a mobile app that allowed users to upload a dental X-ray and receive offers from verified clinics. The project was accepted into an accelerator in Estonia and presented at Web Summit in Lisbon — the feedback was great.
But something was missing. The team realized that technology alone isn’t enough. Patients don’t just want a list of prices — they need a complete support system: a doctor, a treatment plan, and a trusted advisor who’s with them every step of the way.
